THE BRAKES ON A BMW
BMWs are designed with performance in mind, so we understand the urge to push your German vehicle to the limit. It’s important, though, that driving style influence when brakes will wear out. If you are a driver who stops abruptly on a regularly, you’ll probably need to replace your brakes pads and rotors more often than drivers who slow to a stop. Where you live is also a factor being in town, rougher on brakes than open country roads, and mountainous with downhills wear brakes fast other than easy suburban landscape.
So When do BMW need brake service? In general, brake pads should be replaced after 50,000 miles, but because driving environments vary, watch out for other signs that brake service is due.
PAD THINNESS MEANS REPLACE BRAKES
Brake pads are of metal dust (copper, steel, graphite, brass) baked with resin, copper and bonded with clay or porcelain. New brake pads have standard thickness 10 and 12 millimeters, and the minimum pad thickness for safe braking is at 1 mm, but don’t wait until then—pads should be replaced at around the 3-millimeter.
SCRAPING, GRINDING YOUR BMW BRAKE PADS
check your brake pad thickness (you can see them through the rim )—the pads will let you know when they need to be replaced. Brake pads have small metal “sensors into the pad, when you pass that 3-millimeter level, the metal scrapes against the brake rotor with a screech every time you stop. If you ignore the scraping, the next thing you’ll hear is the horrific grating of the pad base against the disc, you need to get to a BMW brake mechanic asap.
DIMINISHED BRAKE PERFORMANCE - BMW
manage the sound of your brake pads scraping , you also feel when brakes need service. jumpy braking and pulsations through the brake pedal is an indications, with your foot sinking to the floor ,if it feels like a longer distances to come to a stop, it’s time for a brake system service.

If brake pads and rotors aren’t the problem. -brake warning light—not the same one when you apply the parking brake— on while you’re driving, it means your brake system is low on brake fluid. This indicate a leak or a problem with the brake master cylinder.
