So When do BMW need brake service? In general, brake pads should be replaced after 50,000 miles, but because driving environments vary, watch out for other signs that brake service is due.
PAD THINNESS MEANS REPLACE BRAKES
Brake pads are of metal dust (copper, steel, graphite, brass) baked with resin, copper and bonded with clay or porcelain. New brake pads have standard thickness 10 and 12 millimeters, and the minimum pad thickness for safe braking is at 1 mm, but don’t wait until then—pads should be replaced at around the 3-millimeter.
SCRAPING, GRINDING YOUR BMW BRAKE PADS

If brake pads and rotors aren’t the problem. -brake warning light—not the same one when you apply the parking brake— on while you’re driving, it means your brake system is low on brake fluid. This indicate a leak or a problem with the brake master cylinder.
